In as windy a place as Shetland, it was always natural that wind turbines should emerge as a potent source of electricity.

Northmavine offers many sites where windpower is a natural option for providing warmth and helping to subsidise spending on other uses of electricity. Two community halls benefit from wind generators, and NCDC was responsible for the installation of two wind turbines at the Ollaberry Industrial Estate, which supply the local community shop and PJ Hurson’s garage with power.

Other private windpower projects have been successfully undertaken in Northmavine, and anyone interested in pursuing this option for themselves is welcome to contact NCDC for information.

Tidal and solar power are also alternative sources of energy, solar used already in Northmavine and tidal under development with great success in Bluemull Sound between Yell and Unst. Yell Sound has potential in tidal generation and this too is something NCDC is keeping a watchful eye on.
