Old Urafirth School
We continue to work on plans for the Old Urafirth School site as a community-led housing project. The site, which includes the former classroom and schoolhouse, has been discussed for a number of years as a potential opportunity to help meet local housing need in Northmavine.
The project has already progressed through several early stages, including a structural survey in 2021 funded by the Shetland Community Benefit Fund and a housing needs assessment, alongside initial architectural feasibility work in 2023 funded by the Scottish Land Fund. The current proposals are focused on creating affordable homes to rent, reflecting local needs and supporting people who want to live in Northmavine.
Weekend consultation
A public exhibition was held at the weekend in the Hillswick Hall, and it was lovely to see people taking the time to come along, have a look at the proposals, and share their thoughts. The event gave local people the opportunity to speak with staff and directors, ask questions, and help shape the next stage of the work. You can see the drawings and information that was presented below.
Community feedback is an important part of this project. We are keen to hear what people think about the ideas so far, and to better understand local housing needs as we move forward. You can fill in our very short housing survey here: Old Urafirth School Development Proposals Public Questionnaire It really helps us when we are applying for funding and creating our business plan to have as much feedback as possible.
What happens next
This is still an early-stage project, but the views gathered over the weekend will help inform the next steps. The next stage will be to acquire the site from Shetland Islands Council. NCDC will keep the community updated as we progress.
