Background
Dr. Dowle and Rev. William Alexander started the Happy Hour Club
in 1971 as a community project for the over 65s, with the aim
of improving the physical and mental health of the elderly in
the parish. In October 1971, there were 42 members and they held
their first Christmas Party on the 8th December 1971.
In the meeting of March of 1973 there were 18 members present
and membership was 25p annually. There were raffles and sales
of work to raise funds for outings, parties and for hospitality
for groups outwith Northmavine. Meetings were held in halls throughout
the year (weather permitting) - fortnightly in summer and monthly
in winter. Meetings featured home bakes, dancing, talks, slide
shows and dramatics.
In recent years, the Happy Hour Club has met in summer months
only, 3-5pm. Tea and biscuits are on offer, as are a good chat,
a game of cards or knitting. There are also humourous recitations
by Maggie Blance plus outings and lunches at Whalsay, Vidlin and
Yell.
The Happy Hour Club are always happy to have new members.
If you would like to attend, you would be made most welcome!
The Happy Hour Club has received support grants from the Charitable
Trust, Northmavine Community Council and the SIC.

Lerwick Bus Trips
There are fortnightly bus trips to Lerwick for the elderly on
every second Tuesday. This uses the service bus, and the bus driver
will drop off anyone at the Co-op who wishes to do their shopping,
going on from there into the town centre.
The bus then returns to the Co-op to pick people up again and
take them to the street. The bus leaves the Viking Bus Station
in Lerwick at 3pm.
